Productivity is the primary focus when it comes to step and chamfer drilling. In this production process, it is possible to complete several steps using a single tool. Step drilling is a popular solution to reduce process times, especially in mass production. Examples of traditional applications include chamfering threaded core holes and inserting screw head countersinks.
Stepped holes place great demands on the precision tools used to make them. During the drilling process, the drill creates a hole with several different diameters in a single step. Chip removal is optimised by producing short chips at the cutting edges. Drills that produce the chamfer for the thread being made in a single step eliminate the need for a tool change, which in turn saves valuable machine time. Special tools are often used since individual parameters, such as the drill diameter, step length and step angle, often have an impact in step drilling operations. There are however step drills designed in accordance with the DIN standard that are suitable for standard applications.
ZCC Cutting Tools offers standard drills and special tools for efficient step and chamfer drills. Do you need help with your chamfer and step drilling applications? Then contact us. We’re there to help.
